- What structures and/or opportunities currently exist for the Newark Valley High School community to come together to build professional expertise?
- What resources and/or support would we need in order to continue to grow in our professional expertise?
One structure that currently exists at NV to build professional expertise is our APPRs. Working together as a team we began with professional dialog to set up guidelines for our blog. Conference days also offers opportunities for teachers to work together to build a bridge between curriculums and gain insight into different teaching strategies and identify when courses cross over –providing us the opportunity to collaborate.
ReplyDeleteThe most valuable resource we have is within our own walls, the faculty. We need time to work together in cross-curricular teams. We need strong teacher leaders who are willing take risks and dare to try new techniques and technologies.

ReplyDeleteThere are several opportunities (in house) that help develop our professional expertise. Throughout the year we have the opportunity to participate in workshops in the district that keep our staff updated on technology and state standards. We also have wonderful resources through our school library. The FL department was able to attend a workshop given by our librarian on great web tools that can be applied in FL classrooms.
With statewide budget cuts, it might be a little more difficult to grow to our full extent professionally (in the near future), especially when it involves workshops out of our area, but I believe this will turn around as our financial situation improves. I agree with Ms. A., we also have a great resource here with our faculty, conference days and opportunities like our current APPR selection.

ReplyDeleteTeachers in the Newark Valley School District have opportunities to work on professional expertise via conference days, workshops through BOCES, and conferences offered through professional organizations. This year’s conference day was based on Focus of Learning using the Backward Design model. Teachers worked with their departments incorporating the new Common Core Standards. The district offered additional workshops through BOCES for teachers to continue working on Focus of Learning.
Due to budget constraints in NYS, I have to agree with Ms. A., that we will need to do more collaboration with teachers in other departments. The APPR this year is one example of this taking place. I believe the teachers in the high school would be willing to do cross-curricular work if given the opportunity.
